I'm a belt and braces man when going some place I've not been before and take both.

If you have to rely on a GPS you shouldn't leave your drive

Tell that to all the delivery drivers who rely on their sat navs to find their delivery points or tourists trying to find their digs for the night. Even the fishermen out at sea rely on GPS. It isn't just for hikers.

Anyone who relies on GPS is asking for trouble. It's a US military system and selective availability and signal dithering  which used to  be on all the time  until the mid 1990s  to limit accuracy to useless and completely unpredictable levels will be reapplied in times of tension.

Feel free to use GPS to find ma hoose for a visit or deliveries. Type in the postcode and you will arrive at a destination about a mile away.  I really do not want that sort of margin of error atop the Ben. Use an OS map and you can arrive at my front door +/- 10 metres.
'til a voice as bad as conscience,
rang interminable changes,
on an everlasting whisper,
day and night repeated so-
"Something hidden, go and find it,
Go and look beyond the ranges,
Something lost beyond the ranges,
Lost and waiting for you,
Go."

Using a postcode could take you only "thereabouts" for quite a few places !!
GPS is great for nearly all purposes .... but they use batteries so not to be relied on in the hills in winter.  :( :(
When the USA put in their obfuscation it still gave +- 30 metres so still good for general purposes.

plus point: might be quieter on the roads.... :8) a particular bugbear of mine is people driving along with their gps fixed in the middle of their windscreen. many of them you can actually see leaning towards it as they drive
