looking for a river rod, 9ft 5weight, any tips?

Having tried most I've now opted to build my own rods. Great fun and value.

Remember most of the cost is in the labour.

You'll get a goodblank plus fittings for less than£70.

Rack can be made and rotor plus odds and end will be £50.

If you tie flies then you'll be able to do it no problem

Where do you buy your blanks and fittings for that price? I have scouted around but always get taken back to American retailers for decent rod making materials.

How do you Know which blank to buy? you can't try a line on it. I assume American ! I love making my own stuff but unless your making several rods surely its not that much of a saving if you have to keep buying blanks.Sorry to butt in on this but I too would like to make a river rod but Im wanting alight line
8  -  8 1/2 ft that will roll cast.as most of my fishing I can't back cast because of high banks trees etc

If you want a 9ft 5wt rod that's the blank you buy. Sure, you can't try before you buy, but if you do it right you can have a top of the range rod for a fraction of the price. Also very satisfying to catch on your home made rod as well as your own tied flies.

Most of the blanks you get are the same. There is very little difference between high end and good quality.

Both  the blanks I bought were from eBay. I bought a 11 1/2ft 3 wt and a 10ft 2Wt with a medium action.

The fittings I bout from "rods and rings and things". The reel seat I got off eBay.

My brother caught a 3lb brownie on the 3wt last year. He said it was the best fishing experience he'd ever had.

The glue and all those bits can be bought from David Norwich.

All quite cheap.
