I mainly fish rivers and don't often use a fishing bag. Sometimes when trotting for grayling I will take a day rucksack. If I fished hill lochs more often I would probably be using the rucksack more often.

Mainly it is a waistcoat/vest for me.This is what is in or attached to it..

Landing net
folding wading staff (sometimes)
food and drink
permits
spare tapered leaders
tippet material
fly boxes (3)
scissor/forceps
nippers/nail knot tool
gink
zink
mucilin
amadou
tungsten putty
split shot
yarn for indicators
foam indicators
insect repellant
sunscreen
suncure
gorillapod (camera tripod)

There is probably other stuff I've forgotten (not to mention decomposing bananas and the like).

A camera is slung round my neck too.

When out in a boat I take the kitchen sink etc. :)

What do you guys take fishing?

Alex

On my eyes - always :) I wore a size 8 muddler on my eyelid once . That won't happen again.

Forgot the fullers earth, knife and some other seasonal stuff .

I use a waistcoat during the trout season but tend to carry a bag when Salmon and Grayling fishing.  I carry much less in my bag than I do in my waistcoat   While trout fishing I usually have the following in my waistcoat:-

Landing net
Food and Drink
Extra layers of clothing
Permits
Tippet Material (4 spools Rio Powerflex 1.6lb, 2.4lb, 3.2lb, 5lb - 4 spools Fulling Mill flourocarbon 3lb, 4lb, 5lb, 6lb)
Forceps
Scissors
Torch (2)
Suncure (wader repair)
Superglue
Gink
Fullers Earth
Split Shot
Pencil
Wee kit with braided loops and power gum.
Leader wallet with some made up leaders (spider set up and czech nymph set up as well as dry fly) and some indicator braids.
Avon Skin so soft
Toilet Paper
Midge Net
Baseball Cap
Spare spool for reel (usually carry a floater and a sink tip)
Camera
Specs Case (I'm usually wearing the specs)
Mobile Phone
A couple of plasters
A Priest (not often used but I like to have it at hand in case I need to despatch a fish)
A polly bag in case I keep one.
Fly box (1) - C&F type with nymphs and spiders on the slotted foam side and dries, streamers and indicators in compartments on the other side.

Think that's it

Some things added and subtracted as season progresses. Always have a wee shoulder bag, early season to end of May i might walk a couple of river bank miles so i must have my mini flask with well peppered lentil soup and something to bulk up with.... a big pork pie would do. Don't need for them for the night fishing just a bit of chocolate.

Fly boxes get rearranged/swapped, tammy rested, mossie cream, torch (wind up) and priest added.

Toilet paper yes, however if its a choice between that and my lentil soup to squeeze into the wee bag its the soup that stays. There are usually some doken leaves or similar nearbye. What ??? after all it is supposed to be wild fishing, lots of running water to wash the hands and all biodegradable  :D

Wee Bri, can relate to all those lighters, its something i really miss is a cigarette on the bank with my lentil soup, but I've made the decision and the space created can now be used wisely, like for half a roll of toilet paper for instance.

One thing i carry is an old filleting knife. I fish on my own most times and apart from the practical uses it provides, i also find it a great comfort when fishing well into the night.

Cheers,

EW

Listen son, said the man with the gun
There's room for you inside.

3 weight

Because i take the bus to most of my fishing a vest is a no-no

SO, in my 47ltr rucksack i have to fit my ;
waders
wading boots or crocs depending on where im going
my reel + spare spools if im pike fishing
My 4-piece rod
my camera
between 1 and 5 fly boxes depending where im going
my forceps
my crimping pliers, crimps , swivels and trace wire again if im piking
1 spool of mono, 3 spools of tippet material
wee tube of indicators
spare fleece
munchies
plenty water/ lucozade
scissors
polaroids
mibile phone
wallet
and lately ive been carrying a cut down cheapo sleeping mat as a light stowaway seat.

My gear seems pretty minimal compared to most, which surprised me. If im only out for a few hours you can cut that list down by at leats half.

Wildfisher

My normal gear for the rivers is:

Chest waders + felt soled boots
Wading staff (essential unless it?s a small burn)
Wading jacket (on cold days)
Wide brimmed hat
Rod
Reel with floating line
Net with magnetic release
Polaroids  + flip-up magnifying lenses
Permits etc the like are in my wallet

I usually carry no bag, everything else goes in the vest

2 x spools of nylon ? usually 3 and 5.7 lb copolymer
A  spare tapered leader
Leader rings (seldom used now)
Camera
Sandwich, drink + mars bar, all fit in the vest easily
3 fly boxes, will be reducing this  to 2, perhaps even 1
Forceps /  snips
Gink
Fullers earth
Dry shake
Silicone mucilin
A bit of bog roll for drying flies (it's as good as anything)
A few indicators and some yarn
Light waterproof jacket (if not wearing a wading jacket)
Midge repellent
Midge net
A dry cloth ? an old dishtowel
Suncure

The above amounts to next to nothing to carry as most of the carried items are tiny and light. I am always looking for ways to further reduce the above.

rod
reel--floatin line usually always , but have an intermediate leader with me too
nylon--2 spools 4lb line

box of flees
gink & leeda sink putty
malky--for administering the last rites--not used much now though
pair of polaroids and bunnet
midge juice

4 cans o lager

This is for a wee day trip -usually 7-8 hrs --mind you it can stretch to 12 in the summer thats about it as far as gear goes ---will wear waistcoat & chestys //or just boots depending on the weather and jacket to if necessary ---think thats ma basic ---i can still bite my line --and have never really had to use forceps/disgorger --if i think its not gonna make it --my wee quarry will get despatched
Make sure a go for a crap afore a go ---but if ye do get caught short av seen me use a sock
