Midgie Hater

btw, midgie hater; have a look at the primus omni-fuel models. msr used to have a metal barreled fuel pump which was virtually indestructible. about 30 years ago they changed it to plastic to make it lighter and i found them to be much more fragile. i've had them split, the pump pull out of the barrel and the threads chewed up by fuel bottles.and i was a devout fan of msr for years.the pimus pump unit is metal and the fuel system is genius: the valve will even accept std screw-in gas cylinders, so you've got three fuel types. plus they don't clog as much and they're more efficient. still solid swedish engineering but brought into the 21st century. not cheap, but no more expensive than a dragonfly or xgk.

Thanks for that heads-up Dave. I think you've jogged my memory a bit there because, although I only started serious mountain wanderings about 30 years ago I vaguely recall my more experienced companions at the time saying something similar, then and since. I'll have to ask the two i'm still in touch with if i've got that right. Certainly there's not much use in a multi-fuel cannister combined with a great stove if said cannister can't be relied upon. Cheers, Les :)

George really liked the stove for the speed it boiled at although this year he struggled because of the low temperatures we experienced until I advised him to keep the gas canister closer to the stove which helps to heat the cylinder up and allows the gas to expand and go gaseous :)

This is the one I have.

It says £40 but I only paid £8.99 a number of years ago :) It has a pre-heater on it which helps at low temperatures and so it runs on liquid gas if you lie the cylinder on its side or even upside down. I never liked the thought of carrying meths around so have never used a liquid fuel stove but George had a Trangia and then the Swedish Army Trangia for years and liked it well enough but after using the gas stove he likes it for the weight, space saving and speed of cooking.
Don't worry, be happy.

Carried it in full, then carry it out empty.
